Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel 2,430 metres (7972 feet) above sea level, retains its place among the heights of world archaeological and scenic sites. Yet this tour includes a wider range of wonders, such as Cuzco, once the capital of the Inca empire; Arequipa, the “White City” where Baroque architecture meets indigenous craftsmanship in blocks of local, pale sillar stone; and the high waters of Lake Titicaca, as well as characterful hotels and elegant train travel.
